WhatInStartup is a utility that is an alternative to the Windows msconfig. It shows you a list of all the programs that start up automatically when the operating system loads.

It has the ability to add new items to the startup list, modify the properties of existing commands, enable or disable them or delete the entries.
Unlike Microsoft’s msconfig tool, this utility does not manage the Windows services that start up but it gives a set of extra features when managing the normal programs that automatically load with the operating system. One such feature is very useful, especially if you have this frustrating problem: disabling a program from the startup list and finding it there again when you restart the system. WhatInStartup can monitor your system and keep locked the changes you made, even when it deals with such “stubborn” programs.
The right-click context menu gives you a set of useful actions. Here are some examples: searching the name of the entry on Google (in case you do not know what that program does or if it is a Trojan/virus), executing the command, finding the location of that entry (if it is in the registry, it opens up the exact location where the entry is found).
To sum up, this is a small, free and useful utility, recommended for those that don’t like to have too many icons in the system tray or too many programs running in the background.

  • Good msconfig alternative
  • Blocking programs that automatically re-add themselves to the startup list
